Kindness is …

Kindness is the language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see
(Mark Twain).

In my opinion, this quote is applicable to education. A kind and supporting instructor can teach much more effectively than a strict or detached one. For example, it is always pleasant to go to classes to a kind professor because the atmosphere in the class is positive. Positive atmosphere, in turn, encourages students to participate more actively in discussions (since they are not afraid of their professor’s strict criticism), to be creative in their home assignments (since they know that creative approaches to problem solving are encouraged), and, bold in group research projects (since each member of the group and each group work with pleasure on their task). Moreover, usually, it is kind professors who stir students’ interest in their subject matter encouraging some of them to take more courses on the topic or even specialize in the discipline. Therefore, kind attitude contributes positively to the learning process. It is important to point out, however, that “kind” does not mean the one who does not criticize, but the one whose criticism is constructive, whose respect to students is consistent, and whose preparation for classes makes these classes interesting and engaging for students.
